Russula elegans Bres.
Cap 2-6cm across, convex; deep carmine red to purplish red or red-brown, often with discolored cream patches; peels halfway. Gills fragile; white to cream, yellowing with age. Stem 25-50 x 5-12mm; white staining yellow. Flesh soft; white, yellowing. Odor fruity. Taste mild. Spores ellipsoid, 7-8.5 x 6-7.5µ; warts 0.3-0.6µ high, with connectives forming a partial reticulum. Deposit clear yellow Habitat under oak in grass. Found in New Jersey. Season July-September. Edible. (Never eat any mushroom until you are certain it is edible as many are poisonous and some are deadly poisonous.)
